The Sylmar Neighborhood Council wishes you a happy Juneteenth!
Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, is a holiday celebrated on June 19th to commemorate the effective end of slavery in the United States. It specifically marks the day, June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African Americans of their freedom, as proclaimed in the Emancipation Proclamation. This was more than two years after the Proclamation was signed.
